A Clinical Study in 252 Cases of Burn Patients

Abstract
During the oeriod of 14 years from October, 1957 to December, 1970, 252 cases of burn patients
were treated at this surgical Department in Pusan National University Hospital.
These 252 cases were reviewed and summarized as follows:
1) The age distribution showed from 2 months old to 78 years old. The highest incidence ages group
was under 9 years old: 81 cases (32%). Male was affected more frequently than female, the incidence
being 157 cases (62.7%) and 95 cases (37.3%). The ratio of male and female was 1.7 : 1.
2) Seasonal distribution showed that Spring and Summer were more higher than in Autumn and
Winter.
3) The cause of burn were frequently flame (50.44%), scalding (44%) and electric burn (3.4%)
in order.
4) Predominant group in extent (30¡­39%) was 21% and 70¡­79% was leastincidence (3.5%).
The ratio of 2nd (183 cases) and 3rd(69 cases) degree was 2.65 : 1.
5) In labarotory data : 76 cases (24.2%) showed hemoconcentration. "A" type blood group was
highest incidence (35.6%) and "AB" type least incidence (9.3%).
6) Predominating organisms of wound infection were staphylococcus aureus(52.4%), E.coli(19.7%),
beta-hemolytic streptococcus (13%), staphylococcus albus (13%), and pseudomonas aeruginosa(9.8%)
in order.
7) The most frequent complications were wound infection (24%), superficial thrombophlebitis
(10%), genitourinary infection (8.3%) and conjuctivitis (7.1%) in order.
8) The over-all mortality rate in this series was 23.2% and the mortality rate was high in children
and low in old age group. The highestcases of death was burn shock (36.2%).
